Case study

Traffic management contractor improves safety, productivity and driver behaviour with Verizon Connect

We have seen an improvement in vehicle maintenance and driver behaviour, particularly around speeding.
David Lewin
Executive General Manager

With over 1200 employees across 16 locations and a 430-vehicle fleet, Lack Group delivers traffic and road services, training, and recruitment support throughout southeast Australia.

The company has a long track record for high-quality service, working with Tier 1 clients on some of Australia’s largest infrastructure projects. Lack Group’s customers operate in a wide range of industries, including highway maintenance, construction, infrastructure energy and utilities.

The challenge

While Lack Group had a GPS solution in place, with a large fleet operating across numerous depots and job sites, it identified the need for a more comprehensive fleet management solution.

“We undertook a review, which included the evaluation and effectiveness of our current systems. We identified that the efficiency, interaction and user interfaces could be improved, and the business required a fleet management system solution.”

- David Lewin, Executive General Manager

Executive General Manager David Lewin and his team set out to find a system that could provide real-time location and status information and deeper insight into fleet operations.

With fuel costs on the rise, Lack Group required the ability to monitor idling and other wasteful practices to reduce overall consumption. The company also needed its chosen solution to support preventative maintenance and help keep unexpected downtime to a minimum.

Behaviour behind the wheel was identified as another potential area of concern. With so many drivers out on the road, management needed a reliable way to identify the impact of speeding and other harsh driving events on safety, brand reputation and fuel economy.

Finally, it was vital that any fleet management solution could integrate seamlessly with Lack Group’s internal resource management system.

The solution

Lack Group chose Verizon Connect in large part due to the platform’s seamless integration with the company’s existing Traffio system. David and his team were confident that our applications represented the most comprehensive and cost-effective solution on the market.

“After considering the benefits of integration with Traffio and the potential cost savings compared to our current supplier, the decision was made to transfer our fleet over to Verizon Connect.”

The introduction of our solution has helped Lack Group monitor and manage idling, speeding, and other driver behaviours. Management teams can also use data gathered by the system to make faster, more informed decisions and improve safety and productivity across the board.

The result

Lack Group has realised a number of efficiency gains since implementing the Verizon Connect solution.

The ability to monitor engine operation and status has resulted in a significant reduction of idling times across the fleet, while preventative maintenance tools have helped to reduce downtime and unexpected repairs.

With Traffio integration, Lack Group can more easily monitor its vehicles outside scheduled work hours, reducing unauthorised use and the associated costs.

“Verizon Connect allows us to monitor idling, resulting in a significant reduction in idle times.”

The improved visibility offered by our solution has also allowed the company to monitor driver behaviour more closely. Data on speeding and other reckless driving events is used to add context to incidents on the road, enabling the company to coach improved behaviours and take action against repeated breaches of safe driving policies.

“We have seen an improvement in vehicle maintenance and driver behaviour, particularly around speeding.”

Live location data has proved beneficial, too. After the theft of a vehicle, Lack Group was able to direct police to its whereabouts, resulting in its recovery and the arrest of the perpetrators.

These safety improvements have allowed the company to lower its risk profile in the eyes of insurers, resulting in lower fleet policy premiums.

Such is the success of our partnership. Lack Group has plans to implement Verizon Connect solutions further in the future. We are working together to integrate fuel card transactions, helping management fight fraud by cross-referencing purchases with vehicle location and specifications.
