Victoria-based roadworks firm improves fleet safety, efficiency and visibility with Verizon Connect

“With Verizon Connect, we can now find out where all our assets are and make sure our people are safe.”
David Downie
Interim CEO

Cranes Civil & Surfacing provides advice, expertise and a wide range of services to residential customers, private companies and local government authorities across eastern Victoria and southern New South Wales.

Its dedicated team works on all manner of construction, infrastructure and earthworks projects, including asphalting, bitumen sealing, highway repairs, streetscapes and redevelopments, sports facility development, driveways, and line marking.

The company’s 300-plus fleet of vehicles and equipment operates across numerous job sites as well as its head office in Bairnsdale, Victoria, and depots in Orbost, Omeo and Cann River.

The challenge

With hundreds of vehicles and other equipment spread across tens of thousands of square kilometres, Cranes needed a simple way to monitor its mobile operation.

“Tracking the whereabouts of our vehicles and the safety of our employees is paramount to our business ethos.”
David Downie, Interim CEO

As well as monitoring efficiency and productivity, Interim CEO David Downie wanted greater confidence that all assets were safe, secure and only used in line with company policies.

A comprehensive and reliable fleet management solution would afford the Cranes management team greater peace of mind that they could locate assets around the clock, wherever they may be.

The solution

After thoroughly investigating the available solutions, Cranes opted for Verizon Connect largely due to our wide-ranging capabilities and regular feature updates.

Our solution allows management teams to accurately locate vehicles and equipment to ensure they are where they should be. Management teams can also view weather and traffic information to mitigate delays, keep customers informed and replan routes.

“With Verizon Connect, we can now find out where all our assets are and make sure our people are safe.”

Data gathered on everything from start/finish times to idling also gives Cranes actionable insight that can be used to drive greater efficiency across its fleet.

The result

Verizon Connects helps Cranes meet its dynamic needs across every business day. Should plans change due to weather, road conditions or issues with equipment, its management teams can react quickly to reroute drivers or rearrange job schedules as required.

“Our business is very dynamic and can change in an instant. Verizon Connect helps us stay productive and efficient.”

Our solution also helps Cranes to monitor and manage areas of inefficiency. Wasted time was once a significant drain on the business. However, it now has the tools to identify areas with room for improvement and take steps to save time and resources.

“Probably the biggest improvement has been time saving and stopping time wastage.”

Verizon Connect’s near real-time live map has helped to increase the security of the Cranes fleet. After a vehicle was stolen from a depot, office staff were able to track it and pass on up-to-the-minute location information to the police.

As a result, the thief was apprehended, and the vehicle was returned swiftly and undamaged – helping Cranes avoid lengthy downtime and potential insurance costs.

“We were able to track the stolen vehicle on my computer and update the police in another town. The ute was returned to us with no damage, and the criminal was locked up. The police said this just does not happen, so the trackers allowed us to get a great outcome.”

Cranes is keen to implement more Verizon Connect features into their fleet management solution as required. As well as exploring the benefits of our proactive maintenance tools, David and his team continue to keep a close eye on future product updates.
