How do drivers benefit from fleet management technology?

By Holly Dempster September 16, 2020

Much is written about the many benefits of GPS fleet management for businesses. If you’ve done any research into the technology, you’ll know how it can help to improve efficiency, drive productivity and promote fleet safety.

But what of the benefits to the individuals on the front line, using fleet management systems every day – your drivers?

Five ways to support your drivers with fleet technology

Rewards and incentives

Fleet management solutions should not be used simply to reprimand drivers for not working hard or fast enough. On the contrary, you should use your system to reward and acknowledge drivers who perform well, as well as incentivising others to improve.

Driver scorecards, which can measure anything from speeding and idling through to MPG and safety, can be used to rank drivers and promote friendly competition. Those at the bottom of the table can be coached into safe/efficient driving habits, while those at the top can be rewarded with bonuses and prizes.

Manageable workload

Data gathered by a GPS tracking solution can help to improve working processes and lessen any practices that may slow drivers down.

Information on start and finish time, and time spent at each job, can be used to automate billing and timesheets, for example, reducing admin time and driver paperwork.

Fleet management systems can also help to streamline routing, accounting for the number of stops on a driver’s route, along with live traffic information, to reduce wasted miles and delays. Routing details and job information are sent straight to the driver without the need for a lengthy back and forth between the cab and head office.

Safe working environment

As information is automatically gathered on vehicle health, such as fluid levels and fault codes, fleet management technology can help to keep vehicles in peak condition. This can reduce the risk of accident and breakdown.

Information on other events, such as speeding and harsh braking, can also be used to draw up and implement safe driving policies. With clear guidelines in place, drivers know exactly what is expected of them when out on the road.

Support and peace of mind

A comprehensive fleet management solution can help to protect drivers from unfounded customer complaints and inflated insurance claims.

For example, should a customer complain that a driver arrived late or missed a stop, this can be quickly and easily corroborated, rather than being a case of one word against another.

In the event of an accident, speed, location and driving style data can be used to determine fault, offering drivers a valuable resource that can back up their position.

Fewer distractions

Automating processes – such as reporting ETAs, delays, and route changes – helps to remove distractions that can impede a driver’s ability to do his or her job efficiently.

Taking such responsibilities and distractions away from the driver allows them to focus on their core job and helps to decrease unnecessary stress and complications.

Good for your drivers, good for you

Drivers may be understandably concerned about the rollout of new technology. However, far from being a tool to keep tabs on your workforce, modern systems are designed to support your drivers in their daily roles – to the benefit of everyone.
