What’s the score?

How to get an at-a-glance view of driver performance

With drivers out on the road, vehicles creating millions of data points every day and all manner of customer demands making their way across your desk, it’s not always easy to get an at a glance view of what matters most.

Driver scorecards can help. Just like the Top Trumps cards of our childhood, they offer a quick way to ascertain your best performers – and who needs a little help to improve.

What is a driver scorecard?

You need to know how your drivers are performing out on the road, but you don’t have time to sift through masses of data. The driver scorecard is the answer to that problem.

Each driver is scored out of 100 based on a range of safety or efficiency-related metrics. For example, the safety score takes into account the number of unsafe behaviours detected by your in-vehicle tracker, the severity of each instance and the distance travelled by the driver. The higher the score, the safer the driver.

Many more key data events and performance indicators, from mileage and idling to speeding and hard braking, are laid out in a clear and easy to digest dashboard.

As well as spotting top performers and underachievers, this information allows you to rank drivers throughout your fleet and encourage friendly competition among the team. So, whether you’re monitoring safety, fuel efficiency or anything else, driver scorecards make it easy to stay in control.

How can scorecards help your fleet?

Driver behaviour and performance has a direct impact on your bottom line. But it’s not always easy to keep a handle on the kinds of actions that increase wear and tear on your vehicles, eat into your fuel efficiency and put your brand reputation at risk.

With driver scorecards, you can quickly see who is doing what on the road, and gain a better understanding of its impact on your fleet. You can:

  • Monitor and manage instances of idling to reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency.
  • Spot speeding, harsh braking and more to decrease damage to vehicles and promote road safety.
  • Track out of hours miles to monitor personal and unauthorised use of your vehicles.
  • Pinpoint repeat offenders that require coaching into safer and more fuel friendly driving habits.
  • Implement and enforce safe driving programmes across your fleet.

Are scorecards good for drivers?

Absolutely! Scorecards aren’t just good for business – they’re great for your drivers too. An easy-to-understand scoring system based on clear metrics allows drivers to demonstrate good performance and show progressive improvement in their work.

Driver scorecards:

  • Make it easy to reward drivers – with prizes, incentives and companywide recognition.
  • Allow drivers to demonstrate progression and high performance.
  • Offer objective assessment of your workforce.
  • Help you target coaching and performance improvement plans.

Ready to introduce driver scorecards?

If you’re sold on the benefits of driver scorecards and want to monitor the progress and performance of your people, Verizon Connect’s fleet management technology can help.

However, one of the key factors behind any successful technology implementation is engagement. To put it another way, the more your teams understand GPS solutions and their potential benefits, the more likely they are to embrace such solutions in their day-to-day work.
