What is Fleet Tracking?
Fleet tracking is a management system that uses GPS tracking to track vehicle and asset movements (e.g., workers, equipment). It is often referred to as vehicle tracking or Automated Vehicle Location (AVL). A fleet is generally a collection of land-based assets, such as cars, trucks, field workers and powered or unpowered equipment (e.g., trailers).
GPS fleet tracking uses telematics technology to collect data from fleet vehicles and assets. Using a GPS tracking device attached to a vehicle’s OBD port or wiring harness, this data is normally collected in near real time (actively), so it is more useful for dispatchers, fleet managers and business owners. Fleet tracking data can be used to make strategic decisions about fleet operations (e.g., Which vehicle should I dispatch to a new job? Where is the nearest crane? How many generators do we have in the yard? Has my lone worker returned from the jobsite?)
Benefits of a fleet tracking system
An effective fleet tracking solution can help improve:
- Driving behaviour by reducing engine idling time and harsh cornering
- Fuel consumption and reduce fuel costs
- Dispatching and vehicle routing workflows
- Compliance with NZTA work time rules
- Road User Charge reporting and compliance
- Fleet maintenance costs by tracking vehicle diagnostic information
- Asset security with geofence functionality
GPS fleet tracking is an important part of fleet management.
For fleet tracking to be effective you need fleet tracking software that intelligently interprets the huge amount of data coming in from the fleet and converts it into easy-to-use reporting dashboards and exception alerts.
