Introducing our extended view cameras for multi-perspective visibility around fleet vehicles

By Verizon Connect January 15, 2025

In today’s transportation landscape, fleet managers shoulder a significant responsibility for monitoring and promoting the safety and security of drivers, cargo and the communities their vehicles navigate. To help fleets better meet these challenges, Verizon Connect extended view camera solutions provide a comprehensive video monitoring system.

This multi-channel dashcam solution provides unparalleled visibility with four powerful cameras—a rear camera, two side cameras, a cargo camera and an in-cab driver monitoring and road-facing camera—to help mitigate risk and prioritize safety practices. In addition, the in-cab monitor option provides drivers with greater visibility around the vehicle footage. Let’s zoom in for a closer look at the system’s key features and functionality.

Highlights and features

Extended view cameras enhance the capabilities of your fleet management solution by providing a more comprehensive view during critical events. Here’s how it works:

  • Multi-perspective visibility: Whenever a harsh driving event, Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS) event, or Driver Monitoring System (DMS) event is triggered, footage from the peripheral cameras – including rear-facing dashcam, side cameras and cargo camera – will be automatically captured alongside the traditional in-cab driver monitoring and road-facing camera view. This provides a multi-channel view of the situation.
  • In-platform and in-cab access: Fleet managers can access this multi-channel footage conveniently within the Verizon Connect platform. Additionally, an in-cab driver monitor can be installed to provide drivers with real-time visibility of their surroundings, promoting safer driving habits.
  • Complete video downloads: When video footage is downloaded from the platform, it will include all captured channels from the peripheral cameras, offering a full picture of the incident. This enables fleet managers to easily share footage with insurance companies or police to establish liability for a given incident.

Rear camera

Capture the road behind you with precision and clarity. A rear camera provides a clear view of what’s happening directly behind your vehicle, eliminating guesswork when reversing or parking in tight spaces. These dashcams offer:

  • A record of rear-end incidents: Footage of an accident captured by the rear camera can provide crucial evidence to determine fault and make accurate insurance claims.
  • Improved maneuvering: The rear camera video feed makes reversing maneuvers smoother and more controlled, especially in low-visibility conditions or when hauling trailers.
  • Enhanced safety: By providing a clear view of vehicles approaching from behind, the rear camera helps drivers react to potential hazards and mitigate rear-end collisions.

Cargo camera

Cargo theft is a persistent challenge for businesses of all sizes. The Three-Channel dashcam solution cargo cameras offer a robust solution to help protect your valuable assets. Mounted within the cargo trailer, these cameras provide a clear, real-time view of your inventory throughout the journey. This allows you to:

  • Monitor loading and unloading: Keep a watchful eye on the cargo handling process, promoting proper loading techniques and identifying any potential mishandling that could damage your goods.
  • Check on the integrity of your cargo throughout your driver’s journey: This can help create a clear chain of custody for cargo, as well as a record of potential in-route damage due to harsh driving. Video footage can provide valuable documentation for insurance purposes if issues arise.
  • Add a complementary component to existing security systems: Adding a cargo camera to complement security features like motion detection and door alarms helps create a multi-layered security system for your valuable assets.

Side cameras

Help eliminate blind spots and enhance your drivers’ situational awareness with side cameras. Traditional mirrors leave large blind spots on the sides of vehicles, which can be dangerous when changing lanes or merging into traffic. Side cameras effectively address this issue by providing a clear view of what’s happening alongside the vehicle. They promote:

  • Safe lane changes: Side camera footage helps drivers see vehicles in their blind spots before initiating lane changes, helping to manage risks. Footage also enables fleet managers to provide personalized coaching to drivers.
  • Improved navigation in tight spaces: When driving down narrow roads or navigating busy parking lots, side cameras offer a wider field of view, enabling drivers to maneuver more effectively and to help avoid collisions.
  • Enhanced security: The presence of side cameras can deter theft attempts by giving drivers a wide view around the vehicle and providing a visual deterrent to criminals targeting valuables stored inside it.
  • Visibility: Side camera footage can help fleet managers combat false claims involving sideswipes or other side-of-vehicle incidents.

A 360-degree view for drivers

Also as part of this product package, a dash-mounted monitor will enable drivers to see live views of all peripheral cameras simultaneously. When the vehicle is in reverse, the monitor will show only the rear camera feed at full size.

What is a multi-channel camera?

A multi-channel camera, in the context of vehicle monitoring and surveillance systems, typically refers to a camera system that consists of multiple channels or cameras integrated into a single unit. Each channel represents a separate camera that can capture images or footage from a different perspective or angle. These systems are commonly used in vehicles, such as cars, trucks, buses or commercial fleets, to provide a comprehensive view of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Multi-channel camera systems contribute to overall safety, security and operational efficiency for various applications, like commercial fleets or public transportation. They provide a comprehensive solution for monitoring and managing vehicles in diverse settings.

Is there a dashcam for the side of the car?

Yes, there are dashcams specifically designed for capturing footage from the side of the car. These cameras are often referred to as “side-view” or “side-mounted” dash cams. While traditional dashcams are typically focused on recording the view from the front windshield, side dashcams offer an additional perspective by recording what’s happening on the sides of the vehicle.

What is a cargo camera?

A cargo camera is a type of surveillance camera designed specifically to monitor the cargo area of a vehicle, such as a truck, van or trailer. This camera is typically mounted within the cargo space to provide a clear view of the contents, boosting the security, safety and integrity of the transported assets.

Cargo cameras are often part of a comprehensive vehicle surveillance or tracking system, which may include additional features such as GPS tracking, rear view cameras and side cameras. The integration of a cargo camera into a multi-channel system provides a holistic view of the vehicle and its surroundings, contributing to enhanced safety and security measures in the transportation industry.

Why do companies put cameras in vehicles?

Companies install cameras in vehicles for various reasons, primarily aimed at prioritizing safety, monitoring driver behavior, enhancing fleet management and mitigating operational risks.

It’s important for companies to implement camera systems responsibly, including addressing privacy considerations, and that drivers are aware of the presence of cameras. Clear communication about the purpose and use of the cameras helps foster a positive and collaborative relationship between companies and their drivers.
