Frequently asked questions

Is a DVIR required by law?

Completing DVIRs is required for all commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) by the United States Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). See here for more information.

How does Verizon Connect DVIR software work?

The software allows drivers to use a mobile app to complete a digital inspection report. The driver marks each item as pass or fail, adds photos or comments, and then signs and submits the report. That data flows into the main system, where a fleet manager or other users can pull a report in the desktop application of all the inspections completed.

How does DVIR for Reveal help my business?

Our digital DVIR tool helps reduce the burden on your drivers to complete written reports, cuts down on the time needed to fill out the form, improves communication to your mechanics about which vehicles need attention, and makes it easier to comply with roadside inspections and audits. This is all made possible by storing the DVIR data in a central place on the Reveal platform.

How can DVIR for Reveal help with vehicle maintenance?

When communication with mechanics about potential vehicle issues is improved, maintenance tends to be proactive, and vehicle issues can be more quickly resolved.

How do you fill out a DVIR with Verizon Connect compliance software?

The driver will use their mobile device (a smartphone or tablet) to click through the screens in the prefilled form of the inspection report. They will inspect each item, select the ones that fail, and they can add comments on the defects or attach photos for further clarification.

Is Verizon Connect DVIR software customizable?

You can create customized inspection forms from a list of existing items. You can also create new inspection items to fit your fleet’s individual needs.

How long do you need to keep a DVIR?

Federal regulations require that you keep a driver’s vehicle inspection report and any certification of repairs for three months. Our system allows for reports to be stored for 12 months.

Are DVIRs the same as pretrip inspections?

A driver vehicle inspection report must be performed before a driver begins for the day (pretrip inspection) and at the end of the day (post-trip inspection). Learn more on this topic here.

Is the DVIR software stand-alone, or do I need other software?

Our DVIR solution is an add-on feature to our integrated GPS fleet tracking system.

Does the DVIR software work on my smartphone?

Yes, the DVIR mobile app can be used on Apple or Android devices, including smartphones and tablets. Learn more about our mobile apps here.

What happens if I don’t currently keep DVIRs?

Not completing DVIRs or not keeping records of them can subject your company to fines from the Department of Transportation (DOT) in the U.S. Because the purpose of the DVIR is to catch major issues regarding the safe operation of vehicles before they become a safety hazard, not completing DVIRs could lead to driving vehicles which may have a defect and could put your drivers and others at risk.
