5 reasons to install a dashcam

By Simon Austin January 19, 2021

The use of dashcams has increased markedly on British roads in recent years.

Following a government announcement that police forces around the country will receive funding to make it easier for road users to submit dashcam footage as evidence, their popularity is set to rise once more.

Integrating dashcams into your fleet can be hugely beneficial. In-vehicle cameras allow you to more closely monitor driving style, prevent theft and record evidence in the event of an insurance claim.

If you haven’t already done so, here are five great reasons to install dashcams across your fleet.

1. Evidence collection

Video collected by dashcams can be used to support the word of your driver in the event of an accident.

As well as providing clarity around genuine insurance claims, dashcams can also be used to fight falsified and inflated claims – instances of which increased by over 7% between 2018 and 2019.

With a dashcam in place, you can quickly access video snippets from the exact date and time of the alleged event to easily disprove liability in the face of a false claim.

2. Improve driver behaviour

By reviewing video footage of harsh driving events, you can better understand the context of why a driver is making a quick turn, hard stop or fast acceleration.

With this information to hand, you can coach your drivers to improve their behaviour behind the wheel based on specific events.

3. Keep an eye on unattended vehicles

Some dashcam solutions include a parking feature which records whenever it detects motion in a stationary vehicle – i.e. a break-in or collision.

This can help you collect vital evidence should one of your vehicles be damaged while it is left unattended.

4. Lower your insurance premiums

As well as helping you save money in the event of an accident or false insurance claim, dashcams can also help to reduce fleet costs in a more direct way.

Many insurance companies offer considerable discounts to fleets that install dashcam technology.

5. Build trust with your drivers

Many business owners worry that drivers may consider in-vehicle cameras to be a little too ‘Big Brother’. On the contrary, installing dashcams across your fleet can help to increase trust between you and your employees.

With concrete evidence to hand, you are in a much stronger position to trust and support your drivers in the event of harsh driving, road accidents and insurance claims.

Protect what matters

Dashcams offer a valuable extra layer of security to fleet-reliant businesses, helping to protect drivers and vehicles while out on the road.

When used alongside a comprehensive fleet tracking solution, they can also help to improve driver performance and training processes.
