5 ways fleet tech improves driver retention

By Holly Dempster October 28, 2024

Despite the considerable rise in fleets implementing GPS technology in recent years, many misconceptions remain about its impact on drivers.

It is perhaps fair to say that while the business benefits have long been proven, some still see fleet technology as a means to micro-manage those behind the wheel. The reality is very far from this assumption.

Rather than a “Big Brother” spying on staff, modern fleet management technology is more of a trusted colleague. GPS solutions can assist drivers with day-to-day tasks, save them time and help to keep them safe when out of the road.

Where there was once opposition from drivers to this type of technology, there is now evidence to suggest that it can help to improve driver retention.

So, if you’re looking to implement a GPS solution or are struggling with perceptions of the technology across your fleet, here are just a few of the ways it can support your most valued team members.

Recognition, fairness and accountability

Fleet management technology can keep a watchful eye on the road in many ways. A modern GPS-powered solution gathers data on everything from driving styles and behaviours to MPG, site arrival times and job completion. This data and more can be used to reward your top performers and incentivise drivers to be at their best.

Add an integrated video solution to your fleet, and you’ll also get clear footage to support your driver's account in the event of an accident. As well as helping to build trust and reduce blame culture, in-cab dashcams can prioritise safety and reduce insurance premiums.

Safety and stress reduction

Surveys show dashcam systems can have a significant impact on safety. According to our Fleet Technology Trends Survey 2024 of the 49% of UK fleets with video solutions in place, 79% improved driver safety and 66% reduced accident costs.

Dashcam footage and data gathered by fleet technology on speed, driving style, fuel economy and more can be used to improve driver coaching.

Not only can a safer working environment improve retention, but it’s also less stressful day to day. Drivers have peace of mind that their employers are actively prioritising their well-being and putting systems in place to keep them from harm.

Support behind the wheel

Modern fleet management technology is much more than dots on a screen and data analysis. There are plenty of ways that a GPS solution can proactively assist drivers when out on the road.

Driver-facing video systems can alert drivers to potential distraction and fatigue, while audible alerts notify drivers of excess speed and other harsh driving events.

Communication is also much clearer with the help of a comprehensive fleet management solution. Updates to routes, job instructions and prioritisation are shared directly with drivers’ devices, avoiding prolonged back and forth between office and vehicle.

Consistency and efficiency

Fleet management technology can help to make drivers’ working days more predictable and efficient. Intelligent routing reduces unnecessary time behind the wheel, while live map data allows dispatchers to spot and mitigate potential delays.

This can potentially reduce time spent travelling between jobs, the risk of unexpected late finishes and driver fatigue. Predictable working hours can help to improve work-life balance and, in turn, increase job satisfaction. All of which can help you keep hold of your best drivers.

Lower admin burden

Ever heard of a driver who wished they could do more admin? No, neither have we. The good news is, fleet management technology automates and digitises numerous key processes to reduce time spent on administrative tasks.

Everything from timesheets and job paperwork to maintenance records, fuel receipts and expenses can be captured automatically and submitted digitally. As well as reducing admin, this approach helps to remove human error and improve accuracy.

The end result is drivers spending more time driving – and less time managing mountains of paperwork.

Do more for your drivers

Attitudes may be shifting, but there’s still work to do when it comes to making the case for GPS technology to drivers. That said, it has never been easier to do so.

Far from being a tool to keep tabs on your mobile workforce, modern fleet management solutions can help drivers save time, reduce admin, improve their performance, and stay safe behind the wheel.

The more supported your drivers feel, the more satisfied they are likely to be in their jobs – and that’s to the benefit of everyone.
