Focus on Construction: How Verizon Connect customers benefit from fleet management technology

By Holly Dempster May 13, 2021

The construction industry faces a set of challenges like no other. Increasingly demanding customers, often complex requirements, compliance regulation and famously tight margins combine to make this a notoriously difficult industry for fleet-reliant businesses.

So much so that effective planning and watertight efficiency are often the only way for construction companies to remain profitable.

To ensure this is the case, many in the construction industry make use of the latest fleet management technology. Those with comprehensive systems in place report increased productivity and profitability, along with improved safety and customer satisfaction.

Verizon Connect's fleet management solution is one such tool that is proving to be of value to those in the industry. Once in place, it can help fleet managers and business owners to manage complex variables, save time on job administration and processes, improve performance and increase the profitability of every job.

Specialist diamond drilling company, Corecut, is among those seeing the benefits, having increased productivity ten-fold since implementing the Verizon Connect Reveal solution.

We chose Verizon Connect because we needed a system with comprehensive functionality. Through optimising our mobile workforce, we have improved our efficiency and productivity levels vastly.

Corecut Operations Director, Ewan Crocker, makes regular use of the Nearest Vehicle function to assign new jobs and customer requests efficiently. With Garmin integration, Ewan can also send out job instructions straight to each driver's device, so they know exactly where they need to go, what they need to do and when they need to arrive.

Keeping a closer eye on the drivers, optimising their routes and keeping them moving significantly decreases the time my operators spend on the road. All this time adds up, and I can definitely schedule more jobs because of it. I just have more control.

The Verizon Connect system has also helped Ewan calculate the average length of certain jobs. So, he now knows whenever jobs overrun. Live location data also helps the company monitor arrival and departure time to encourage punctuality and efficiency at all times.

Corecut estimates that features like these have helped it achieve productivity savings of more than four hours per month.

It was an easy decision to choose this system. We are able to understand and optimise the movements of our operators – that, on its own, has paid for the system ten times over.

And Corecut is not alone. One of the largest privately-owned construction companies in Scotland, Mulholland Contracts, has also reported significant efficiency gains since working with Verizon Connect.

Working with Verizon Connect has allowed us to reach our goals whilst helping us generate significant long term operational cost savings.

Having deployed the technology across its 100-strong Ford Transit Crew vans, Mulholland quickly realised a significant opportunity to drive ROI by monitoring and managing driver location throughout the working day.

By knowing exactly where our drivers are during the working day, we've saved an average of one hour per week, which across our workforce equals a 2.5% efficiency gain – a major labour boost in the context of a year.

Optimising routes, reducing personal mileage and monitoring driver behaviour has also helped the company increase efficiency across the board – resulting in considerable cost savings.

We have forecasted a saving of 5% on fuel each year, equating to an excess of £50K. This can be redirected to drive innovation elsewhere in the business, in order to maintain a competitive edge.

Another Verizon Connect customer, gritting services contractor GRITIT, has been able to streamline its operations with the help of our solution.

The Verizon Connect system works really well and is easy to use.

Working through the night, GRITIT offers an unseen service, so it's vital that it can show its customers proof of its work. By tracking its operatives in near real-time, GRITIT can guarantee that services have been carried out as requested. This allows the company to offer a higher level of service by accepting the client's liability in the event of an accident.

Verizon Connect is different. The combination of its Cloud/Software-as-a-Service software platform and cutting-edge mobile solutions means the very latest technology is always used.

GRITIT has also used data gathered by the Verizon Connect solution to drive efficiency and improve its services. Its integrated use of mobile devices means it can update and reassign operatives quickly and easily to increase speed to service.

The rest of the industry is still in the dark ages when it comes to smartphone and tablet software, whereas with Verizon Connect, we are able to use the very latest Android and iOS devices.

If a job does not go ahead as planned, the Verizon Connect system raises an alert. This is then passed to the nearest operative to resolve the issue. This automatic flagging means GRITIT can quickly inform the customer, and internally, they can streamline and automate critical tasks across HR, finance, and more.

IT Director, Brendon Petsch, plans to take this data sharing a step further, offering customers a live view of its operatives.

Ultimately, GRITIT would like to provide live tracking data to our customers through Verizon Connect so that they can see for themselves exactly what is happening on site. We are proud to be taking this innovative approach, and Verizon Connect is the ideal partner to help us realise our business goals.
