Goods transport industry insights: How fleet technology can help boost their competitiveness

The general freight industry is key to the EU economy. However, during the pandemic “European road freight transport fell by 0.9% from 2019 to 2020, breaking the upwards trend recorded in recent years”. The main factor "was a decrease in national and international transport”.

Despite this trend, freight transport actually increased in 2021, with 76% of freight transport happening by road - this will likely continue into 2022.

General freight was also identified as one of the top 5 sectors that uses GPS fleet tracking technology in their daily business with 50% of european companies in the transport industry using GPS tracking technology in 2021. 

Further to this in the "Fleet Trends Report Europe: General Freight Industry Insights" conducted for Verizon Connect by ABI Research, we highlight how fleet management is key to helping deliver results and building resilience for all the key industries.

Here are some of the main findings relating to the industry:

• 62% of survey respondents reported improved customer service since they implemented a fleet tracking solution.
• 52% improved productivity.
• 36% have lowered their fuel consumption.
• 44% reduced accidents and 25% lowered labour costs.
• For smart technologies, like in-cab video the benefits go far beyond expectations and 52% of video solution adopters have reduced accident costs and 41% have lowered insurance costs.
